The Cold, Hard Facts on Cryotherapy

— Written By

We’re breaking down the cold, hard facts on cryotherapy. What is cryotherapy? Why should you do it? How will it benefit you? If you’re wondering why you should willingly subject yourself to negative degree temperatures, we don’t blame you. Let us convince you.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to reduce pain or inflammation, speed exercise recovery, opt for a natural anti-aging treatment to flaunt your firm, glowing skin, or are looking for that extra metabolism boost, cryotherapy is calling your name.

As self-care is (finally!) being deemed a necessity rather than a luxury, more and more recovery-based treatments are on the rise. With an abundance of wellness trends available to try, Cryotherapy is at the tip of the iceberg in terms of effective and efficient recovery treatments. Cold therapy has been around for ages (think: ice baths, ice packs, under eye cold treatments) but cryotherapy takes it to the next level. In under 15 minutes, you can walk in and out of Livkraft for any Cryotherapy treatment (though once you’re there, trust me, you won’t want to leave) with a host of health benefits. Slow down the aging process, speed up recovery, manage pain, improve performance… and do it in under 15 minutes? Tell me more.

OK I’m convinced, where should I begin?

At Livkraft, we offer several types of Cryotherapy treatments: Whole Body Cryotherapy, Localized Cryotherapy, and Cryotherapy Facials. With multiple treatments offering a range of benefits, there is something available for everyone. Whether you’re looking for recovery, pain management, or alternative beauty treatments, Livkraft will freeze your worries away.

Whole Body Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy, or cold therapy, is the use and application of cold temperatures to elicit a systemic response to promote healing and regeneration while reducing pain and swelling. This can be achieved by using traditional methods such as an ice pack, a cold tub or even a morning ocean swim during the fall winter and early spring. Whole Body Cryotherapy has evolved to mean exposing the body to liquid nitrogen vapors or the use of electric cooling units to achieve extremely cold temperatures to shock your entire body.  For the past few years, the only option for Whole Body Cryotherapy was devices that did not allow your head, the part of our body with most heat loss and nerve endings, to be exposed to the cold temperatures. Your body was exposed to frigid liquid nitrogen vapors yet your head was still in a 70 - 75 degree environment.

At Livkraft, our state-of-the-art technology uses cold breathable air vapors, allowing the entire body, including the head, to be exposed to the treatment. This creates the optimal recovery and regeneration conditions that have been previously unavailable.

Throughout this session, your entire body is exposed to temperatures ranging from -166°F to -220°F in the form of nitrogen vapor. During the 3-minute session, your body goes into fight or flight mode, sending blood flow to your core, protecting your vital organs. Once the treatment is over, a supply of nutrient rich, re-oxygenated blood is sent throughout the body, pumping nutrients to muscles and tissues while aiding in the removal of toxins. In response to the cold, an anti-inflammatory response is triggered, accelerating recovery time, alleviating aches and pains and soothing muscle soreness. Endorphins are released, leaving you invigorated and energized!

When is the best time of day to do a Session?

Everyone is different, it is a personal preference! Give Whole Body Cryotherapy a try as a pre-workout energy and endorphin boost, post-workout recovery to speed recovery and reduce muscle soreness, or mid-day as a pick-me-up when you need some extra energy!

How long is a typical session?

3 minutes long

How should I feel after my session?

Expect to feel refreshed, rejuvenated and re-energized! You’ll receive an endorphin boost during your treatment, giving you a natural mood and energy boost. This feeling may last up to several hours. Regular cryotherapy sessions will help reduce muscle soreness and speed up recovery

How often should I come for the best results?

For those new to cryotherapy, we recommend 7-10 sessions within a short period of time, no longer than 2-3 weeks. After that period, we recommend coming for regular “maintenance” treatments 2-3 times per week to sustain your results! For those suffering from injuries, serious athletes, or to enhance recovery and performance, we recommend coming 4-7 times weekly, especially during intense trainin

Localized Cryotherapy

While Whole Body Cryotherapy targets the entire body, Localized Cryotherapy is specific to one area. At -260°F, Livkraft’s Local Cryotherapy utilizes chilled nitrogen vapors in a localized stream, focusing on a particular area. This treatment (between five and ten minutes long depending on the body part and surface area) penetrates deeper into the tissue than whole body cryotherapy, reducing pain, inflammation, swelling, and accelerating healing and recovery time.

What is the difference between Local Cryotherapy and Whole-Body Cryotherapy?
Local Cryotherapy penetrates deeper into the skin than Whole Body Cryotherapy to provide targeted relief to specific areas on a deeper level

How long is a typical treatment?

Local Cryotherapy Treatments range from 5-10 minutes, depending on the body part and surface area being treated

Who would benefit from localized cryotherapy?

Anyone suffering from chronic pain, looking to speed up recovery to an injury or surgery, or improve physical performance or range of motion.

Where is localized cryotherapy most commonly applied?

The most common areas include: lower back, shoulders, neck, knees, ankles, wrists

Cryotherapy Facial

7-minutes to relax, destress, and slow down the aging clock. With temperature’s at -260°F you may be wondering how freezing your face could be relaxing, but you’re in for a pleasant surprise. During your treatment, a soothing mist of breathable nitrogen vapor is guided over your face. The nitrogen vapors used during our Cryotherapy Facial utilizes soothing vaporized liquid nitrogen. This allows for a deeper penetration into the skin, increasing blood flow, circulation, and collagen production, reducing inflammation and redness, and tightening and firming the skin. You will leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, with tight, glowing skin.

 How long is the treatment?

Each Cryotherapy Facial is 7 minutes long.

How cold does it get?

Each treatment is set to a temperature of -260 ℉

How often should I come?

We find this is a personal preference and dependent on your goals. The more frequently you come, the better results you will see. You may come as often as every day or schedule your appointments less frequently. We recommend coming between 4 and 7 times from your first appointment and following up with weekly maintenance facials!

Will my face be red?

A Cryotherapy Facial may actually help reduce redness, as the treatment is effective at reducing inflammation.

What does it feel like?

Imagine feeling a rush of revitalizing and invigorating cool air gently blown on your face. Nitrogen vapors with a temperature of -260 ℉ are gently applied around your face for an extremely refreshing and beneficial experience.
